Sergio’s Cuban Kitchen + Bar 2017 Restaurant of the Year
When thinking of Cuban cuisine in Miami one restaurant stands out from the pack: Sergio’s Cuban Kitchen and Bar. The South Florida based restaurant-chain boasts six full service locations (Coral Gables, Doral, East Kendall, Pembroke Pines, Westchester, and West Kendall) around Miami and Fort Lauderdale, serving up Cuban comfort food in well-portioned and well-priced fare for more than 40 years under three generations of family leadership, with CEO Carlos Gazitua now at the helm.
The full-service restaurants serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Morning guests can choose from traditional specials like their famous tortillas, the classic Bistec a Caballo or new fusion dishes like Abuela’s French Toast tossed in coconut flakes and guava syrup. Of course, a proper Cuban breakfast needs a Cafecito and Sergio’s has you covered with everything from cafe Cubano and cafe con leche to coladas and cortaditos. Even better, there are plenty of their homemade legendary (Emeril Lagasse approved!) croquetas or Sergio’s flaky pastries. Sergio’s was also awarded “Florida’s Best Cheap Eats” by Travel & Leisure Magazine for their oven baked empanadas if you’re looking for a quick and easy bite on the go.
Sergio’s offers some of the best lunch deals in town. The Lechon Asado or the Vaca Frita will fuel you for the day. Sergio’s boast a variety of sandwiches including their award-winning Cuban Sandwich and Croqueta Preparada. Guests line up at their coffee windows eager to order local favorites such as the Steak Sandwich or Cuban Frita Burger.
At dinnertime, the menu features new takes on Cuban tapas like thin-crust croqueta pizza, Cuban fries tossed in homemade mojo sauce with red peppers + parmesan cheese, mini Cuban sliders and chicken vaca frita tacos. The entrees offer options like savory pork chunks, black angus skirt steak (churrasco) with chimi-churri sauce, mahi fingers encrusted with crushed mariquitas, all served with a variety of sides like tostones, yuca, black beans and rice, maduros and more. Pair these dishes with their fine selection of red and white wines, beers, or sangrias.
Sergio’s has also managed to incorporate healthy dining through its La Flaca menu, with entrees under 500 calories and with less than 500mg of sodium. Selections include blackened mahi, extra lean turkey picadillo, grilled salmon and braised lean shredded beef in creole sauce (ropa vieja) that can be combined with cauliflower rice, Florida avocados and roasted eggplant pesto stack. Sergio’s La Flaca menu has been recognized by the Florida Department of Health under its “Healthy Happens Here” initiative.
Sergio’s was voted the 2017 “Restaurant of the Year” at the South Florida Tourism Professional Awards. In continuation of their long-term success, Sergio’s has signed a 25-location development deal for Sergio’s Cuban, a new fast-casual concept inspired by their La Flaca menu.
